My name is Nicholas Hernandez, but please call me Cole. I am stationed out here with the US Navy at the White House Communications Agency until Jan 2024. I am attending St Louis parish in Alexandria. I am involved with a young adult sports league called Catholic Sports. Catholic Sports is a sports league for young adults rooted in trying to get a community of likeminded individuals together for recreation and getting closer to God. I am on the volunteer committee as the League Director and report/work directly with the missionary assigned the Alexandria.

As an IT, I am familiar with technology and computers. With the Navy, I oversaw a new network integration for the ship I was assigned to, as well as worked to get the ship in cyber compliance post network install. I have completed my bachelor’s degree with the University of Phoenix. The degree is a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. I am working towards my master’s degree as well in Information Systems. I am hoping to be more involved with the Knights and the corporation while I am stationed here in Washington DC.

I’m thankful, grateful, and humbled to be under consideration for a position on the Mount Vernon Columbus Club (also commonly referred to as “the corporation”) board as a director. The principles of the Knights of Columbus - Charity, Unity, and Fraternity - are also at the core of the operations of the corporation, and have thus enabled and sustained the growth of the corporation. My 11+ years with the Knights in service to the council as both a member and an officer, have shown my commitment to these principles and demonstrated my leadership skills. I think these are both important to have as a director for the corporation. Additionally, my experience as Chairman of the Board during my term as Grand Knight gave me insight into the operations of the corporation.

We have been able to provide so much to those in need through our combined efforts, and in order to maintain our amazing track record of fundraising and providing space for charitable works, we will need help. I believe the challenge for the board and the corporation membership over the coming years will be to look for ways to expand the volunteer base upon which the operations of the corporation and the council depend. I want to continue to develop relationships with members and benefactors, sustaining the principled membership of the council and corporation. As a director, I think I could put my knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to use in finding ways to increase volunteering and perpetuate our mission of helping others, together, and having a good time while doing it.

Biography for SK Mike Murphy, 2PGK

Retired from the Army after 21 years of service, I have been a member of Mt Vernon Council 5998 for over 10 years, serving in various capacities and completing two back-to-back years as your Grand Knight from 2013-2015.

During my time on the Board from 2018-2021, I had the honor of serving as your President during the 2019-2020 Fraternal Year when we earned the Mt Vernon Lee Chamber of Commerce’s “Excellence in Business Award” as the nonprofit organization of the year.

Currently, I serve as the Chairman of the Outdoor Construction and Planning Committee.  Inside the building, I take the lead resolving equipment and plumbing issues such as the replacement of our ice maker, our two reach-in refrigerators, the water fountain, and the installation of a water pressure regulator for our building’s main water supply. I serve as a bar manager supporting special events by selecting craft beers for five beer taps, implementing a maintenance plan for bi-monthly beer-line cleaning (at no cost to the Corporation or Council) and resolving long-standing refrigerant issues.  My time spent supporting our bingo operation enabled me to accumulate 290 volunteer hours for charity.
